New Agency to lead war on drugs

THE Government has gazetted the National Drug and Substance Abuse Control and Enforcement Agency Bill, paving the way for the establishment of a specialised agency to lead the national fight against drug and substance abuse, a crisis authorities have described as a threat to both public health and national security.

The Bill seeks to establish the National Drug and Substance Abuse Control and Enforcement Agency, which will operate with a dual mandate- enforcement of drug laws and rehabilitation and reintegration of victims.

Under the proposed law, the Agency will be headed by a Director-General, supported by two deputies, one in charge of enforcement and the other leading the social services intervention division.

The gazetting of the Bill signals Government’s intent to intensify efforts to tackle the scourge, which has devastated communities and fuelled criminal networks within and beyond the borders.
