Government is committed to enhance productivity in agriculture, as the sector plays an important role in combating the impact of Covid-19, Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.

Speaking at the ninth edition of the National Agribusiness Conference at the ongoing Zimbabwe Agricultural Show on Wednesday, Dr Chiwenga said the attainment of Vision 2030 will made possible by improved agricultural productivity.

“As we are all aware, the pandemic has negatively affected all sectors of the economy and slumped the country’s economic growth trajectory.

“The agricultural sector has not been spared from the scourge of the pandemic, hence there is need to be innovative and come up with initiatives to increase agricultural production and productivity, in order to promote economic development,” he said.

“The sector’s transformational initiatives should also be inclusive of smallholder farmers to ensure food and nutrition security, enhanced income, increased opportunities for value addition and development of agro-business value chains.”

Zimbabwe’s 2021 maize yield is expected to be around 2,7 million metric tonnes, which is 200 percent above last year’s harvest on the back of various successful agricultural programmes that have been implemented by Government.
