VICTORIA Falls City has spent the past four days without water after elephants reportedly damaged electric cables at the resort city’s water pumping station.
Unlike other cities, there are no boreholes in Victoria Falls because of the Kalahari soils and depth of the water table in the area.
Victoria Falls Combined Residents Association (Vifacora) chairperson Mr Kelvin Moyo said:
“Upon trying to find out the challenges leading to a dry spell of almost four to five days, council alluded to the electricity cables at the pump station, which were affected by elephants. So, we are being told that elephants tampered with the cables,” Mr Moyo said.
“The problem is that especially with suburbs like Mkhosana, if they start pumping there’s the issue of the gradient. They need to fill up the water reservoir first so that there is pressure for water to reach all parts of the suburb.”
He said the city has perennial water challenges between late September and November due to low water levels in the Zambezi River.
Last month, elephants and buffalos caused havoc in the city when they destroyed tuck-shops and vegetable gardens.
