ANGOLA will host this year’s AfroCan Championships between July 8 and 16 following an announcement by International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Africa during an official ceremony in Luanda on Monday.
Angola becomes the second country to host the competition after the inaugural edition of the FIBA AfroCan was held in Mali in 2019.
“AfroCan is a huge part of our strategy,” said FIBA Africa president Anibal Manave.
“It allows national federations to get organised and give new basketball talents a chance to play at a high level at some point in their careers.
“I would like to wish Angola good luck, and a good organisation of this event, and let Angola be Angola.”
FIBA AfroCan is a 12-nation quadrennial continental competition for home-based players.
Except for teams that reached the semi-finals of the last edition of the tournament, the remaining eight teams qualify through regional qualifiers.
Only reigning champions Democratic Republic of the Congo; Kenya, who finished second in 2019; Angola, who finished third, and Morocco have been confirmed for the finals.
The four will be joined by either Zimbabwe or Mozambique, who clash in the final of the Zone Six qualifiers in Bulawayo on Tuesday night.
