FIVE people died, while others were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in was involved in an accident at the 8km peg along Mutare-Chimanimani Road near Fern Valley Turn-off yesterday afternoon.

Police confirmed the accident in a statement, saying the kombi veered off the road in an attempt to avoid colliding with a haulage truck.

The injured were ferried to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

The accident comes barely two days after another one involving a commuter omnibus and a haulage truck that occurred near the Rusape tollgate, killing six people.

“A fatal road accident occurred on Sunday afternoon at the 8km peg along Mutare-Chimanimani Road near Fern Valley Turn-off, killing five people.

“A kombi travelling towards Mutare was being overtaken by a haulage truck in front of oncoming traffic. In a bid to avoid collision with the haulage truck, the kombi veered off the road and plunged into a river bed,” reads the statement.

Police urged motorists to exercise caution at all times while on the road.
