Richard Muponde

A Bindura man (64) has been arrested for allegedly raping four minors between the ages of 10 and 14 years on different occasions during his wife’s absence.

The man from the Musana Communal area of Bindura, who could not be named to protect the identities of the minors who are victims of a sexual offence, preyed on the quartet which are related to his wife.

The man is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday confirmed the arrest.

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of a Bindura man (64) for rape cases involving four minors aged 14, 10, 11 and 10. The suspect raped the victims, who are related to his wife, on different occasions,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said.

He said the sexual abuse happened over the past three years since 2019 when the minors came to live with their aunt, the man’s wife.

“This has been happening since 2019 until to date. However, information filtered leading to his arrest, and he is in police custody, and we expect the law to take its course,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged members of the public to consider the safety of the girl child and make sure they are protected from sexual abuse.

“We are witnessing a trend where children are being sexually abused by their relatives. You shouldn’t leave the girl child in the custody of males even if they are relatives, because they risk being raped,” he said.

Government is currently pushing for the Children’s Protection Bill and the Child Justice Bill, which will complement each other to enhance the protection of children.
