NEW: BNC in anti-drug abuse drive

Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) is complementing Government efforts in championing the eradication of drug and substance abuse among youths. 

The nickel producer recently hosted a belated National Youth Day for secondary school learners.

BNC managing director, Mr Thomas Luciyano, said unemployment has contributed to drug and substance abuse, and companies like BNC have an obligation to create jobs and grow the economy to fight the drug problem.

“As a member of Kuvimba House, we have a huge interest in assisting the Government to ensure that its vision and programmes are achieved. Operating in Bindura we have a social responsibility to alleviate the plight of the people.

“It is important for us to safeguard youths if they engage in drug abuse, we will have no today and no tomorrow. That is why we found it necessary to have this day to talk about drug and substance abuse,” said Mr Luciyano.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Monica Mavhunga – who was represented by deputy director local government Mr Aaron Mazingaiso – thanked BNC for spearheading programs to empower the youths and keep them off the streets.

“Zimbabwe is witnessing an upsurge in the number of youths involved in drug and substance abuse including bronclear, mutoriro, Memphis, Musoja and marijuana,” she said.

“The Government has put in place strict regulations on the production and sale of drugs. The drug manufacturing industry is closely supervised by the Government to stop the smuggling and illegal use of drugs.”
