THE launch of the book,“How Beautiful the Feet That Bring Good News”, authored by Sister Ferrera Weinzierl OP, has been hailed as a landmark moment in preserving Zimbabwe’s educational history.
Active from the 1890s, the Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have made a huge impact on education with their “convent schools”.
The 134-year journey of shaping schools and nurturing leaders is described in the book. It reflects on the past, celebrates the present, and envision a future shaped by faith, service and enduring commitment.
Officially launching the book at Dominican Convent School in Harare on Tuesday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to recognise the Dominican Sisters’ significant role in Zimbabwean education, saying the book celebrates both their lasting legacy and underscores the value of safeguarding history.
“We pay tribute to the Dominican Sisters, who have made an indelible mark on our country’s educational system through their dedication and commitment. Their legacy serves as a reminder of the transformative power of education,” he said.
Minister Moyo said Sr Ferrera’s comprehensive volume will be reviewed for consideration for the heritage-based curriculum and schools.
“Notably, they established the second school in Zimbabwe, Dominican Convent High School Harare, which is now an impressive 134 years old,” he said.
Diplomatic secretary to the Apostolic Nunciature in Zimbabwe, Father Eduardo Jose Obispo said the congregation, founded in 1890 by five women, has lived Saint Dominic’s spirit by sharing God’s Word and mercy through education, healthcare, and social justice, bringing hope and growth to communities.
“Although I have not yet had the opportunity to read this book, I am convinced that its pages reflect the spiritual and human richness of the congregation, its fidelity to the gospel, and its unwavering commitment to serving the people of God.
“This work will undoubtedly serve as a valuable testimony to the Lord’s provident action throughout the history of these sisters, inspiring all those who wish to follow the path of missionary discipleship,” Fr Obispo said.
Dominican schools in Zimbabwe regional counsellor for education, Sister Monica Nyachowe O.P, expressed pride in the Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’ contributions, welcoming the book’s inclusion in the curriculum and schools.
She emphasised that despite their long journey of faith and endurance, the sisters brought good news to the world.
Father Isaac Mutelo described “How Beautiful the Feet That Bring Good News” as “not just a record of events”, but a “living story”.
