New born survives trash heap dumping

AN 18-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo teenager has been arrested for allegedly dumping her newly born baby at a dumpsite.

Police confirmed the arrest on Sunday of Cecilia Mlawuzi from Njube suburb.

“I can confirm that we received a case of baby dumping that happened in Njube. Investigations were carried out and we have arrested a suspect,” Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said.

Residents in the suburb said the incident happened a week ago and the dumped baby was found near Njube Presbyterian Church.

Ward 12 councillor Lilian Mlilo said police arrested the teenager following a tip off.

“Residents found the baby wrapped in a towel around 6AM and reported the matter to the police leading to the girl’s arrest,” said Clr Mlilo.

She said the baby was taken to Pelandaba Clinic and later transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital.
