New cases of mumps emerge, 537 dog bites recorded

THE Ministry of Health and Child Care says it has reported 1 326 new cases of mumps, bringing the total number of cases to 20 492.

In its Weekly Disease Surveillance Report, the ministry said no deaths have been caused by the disease.

“The cases were reported from Mashonaland East (280), Mashonaland Central (254), Mashonaland West (200), Manicaland (150), Masvingo (149), Midlands (134), Matabeleland North (106), Harare (27), Matabeleland South (21) and Bulawayo (5).”

In addition, the Ministry reported 1 076 cases of malaria and four deaths, with the highest number of cases reported in Mashonaland East (377) and Mashonaland Central (285).

The deaths were reported in Mazowe, Mount Darwin, Bikita and Masvingo districts. Of the reported cases, 147 (13.7 percent) were of children under five years. The cumulative figures for malaria cases are 150 745 and 246 deaths.

The ministry also recorded 537 cases of dog bites.,
