A new chapter in Zimbabwe’s agricultural development is unfolding, with the youth at its helm.

In a move poised to reshape the country’s farming landscape, President Mnangagwa last week officially handed over 72 Belarusian tractors and 10 combine harvesters valued at US$7,4 million to young farmers.

This investment marks more than just a distribution of modern farming machinery; it reflects a strategic effort to empower youth economically and modernise agriculture, a sector that remains the backbone of Zimbabwe’s economy.

The state-of-the-art equipment is expected to enhance productivity, encourage innovation, and reduce the barriers young people often face in accessing mechanized farming tools.

Empowered youth always make for an unstoppable future. When young minds are given the right tools, they create waves of change that shape a better world.

At the handover ceremony, held at the Agricultural Mechanisation Facility in Hatcliffe, Harare, last Wednesday, President Mnangagwa went above and beyond, personally committing to cover 50 percent of the cost of these cutting-edge machines.

This is a testament to his unwavering belief in the power of youth and his commitment to their success.

But that was not all.

The President also announced a complementary US$10 million irrigation initiative to support youth business units, ensuring young farmers have the resources they need to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change and unpredictable rainfall patterns.

This additional support will help establish irrigation systems, allowing young farmers to grow crops all year round and ultimately boost Zimbabwe’s food security and the economy.

For young farmers, the impact of these donations is transformative. This isn’t just machinery. It’s a lifeline for young people who are now able to tap into the full potential of Zimbabwe’s agricultural industry.

With 72 new tractors capable of tilling 7 700 hectares over a short timeframe, the potential for increased agricultural output is immense.

According to Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuku, these tractors will make it possible to cultivate significantly more land, leading to an increase in crop production.

“With an expected yield of 77 000 tonnes of grain, this initiative could inject US$26 million into the economy,” he said.

The empowerment doesn’t stop with the equipment. The Government’s commitment to ensuring that these tools are used responsibly and effectively is evident in the accompanying financing plan.

Young farmers can access these powerful tractors through flexible financing options, with no collateral, a three-year repayment period and an affordable interest rate of 7, 5 percent per annum.

This allows young entrepreneurs to focus on what truly matters: building their businesses and cultivating the future of agriculture.

Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire, emphasised the long-term benefits, stressing that this empowerment is about more than just equipment, it is about shaping a resilient, self-sustaining future for Zimbabwe’s youth.

“This equipment must benefit the youths and the nation at large through agricultural production as we strive to achieve food security,” said Minister Machakaire.

The President’s initiative has placed Zimbabwe’s youth at the forefront of the country’s economic and agricultural transformation.

For young people across the nation, this donation is life-changing.

No longer will they be sidelined or excluded from the economy. Instead, they now have the tools to lead the charge in modernising agriculture and driving economic growth.

Provincial youth leaders expressed their gratitude, with many noting that this is the kind of empowerment that they’ve been asking for.

“Youths make up over 60 percent of the national population, and it is crucial that we are given the resources to contribute meaningfully to food security and economic empowerment,” said Harare province Zanu PF youth chairperson, Cde Emmanuel Mahachi.

This empowerment is also not just about individual success; it’s about collective progress, as the youth have been encouraged to operate in partnerships, clubs, or associations to maximise output.

Youths across Zimbabwe now have an opportunity to build businesses that are not only profitable but also contribute to the country’s overall agricultural productivity.

From Matabeleland South, where modern tractors are essential for boosting livestock production, to Mashonaland West, where the emphasis will be on ensuring that only youth involved in crop farming benefit, the initiative is creating a ripple effect of opportunity and progress.

International leaders are also taking note.

Cde Collen Malatji, president of South Africa’s ANC Youth League, praised President Mnangagwa for his foresight, calling the initiative a milestone in capacitating young people.

“An empowered youth will be able to protect and safeguard the country’s interests without being compromised by detractors,” Cde Malatji said, underscoring how youth empowerment strengthens the entire nation.

This is the moment Zimbabwe’s young farmers have been waiting for, a moment when their dreams and ambitions are matched by the support and resources they need to succeed.

With advanced tractors, irrigation systems, and a Government fully invested in their future, young Zimbabweans now have the tools to reshape their lives, transform their communities and help feed their nation.

This is not just a gift; it is a transformation. It is a commitment to the youth of Zimbabwe to build a better tomorrow, one that is rooted in self-sufficiency, innovation and growth.

This initiative has ignited a spark that will burn brightly for generations to come, lighting the way for young people to not just farm but lead Zimbabwe into an era of agricultural prosperity.
