MANICALAND’S two representatives in the top-flight league – Manica Diamonds and Tenax – endured contrasting fortunes in their opening matches of this campaign’s Chibuku Super Cup competition.

A second-half brace by striker Farai Mugumwa propelled the Gem Boys into the next round of the tournament after seeing off Yadah Stars 2-0 at Vengere Stadium in Rusape yesterday.

On the other hand, Chauya Chikara were eliminated at the first hurdle after suffering defeat by a similar scoreline at the hands of FC Platinum the previous day at Mandava Stadium.

They now shift their focus to the league marathon where they are battling to evade relegation.

Yesterday’s victory saw Manica Diamonds return to winning ways after picking two successive draws in league encounters at the same venue.

Having now booked a quarter-final berth, their coach Johanisi “Dutch Mentor” Nhumwa reiterated that they are geared to go all the way and clinch gold.

He expressed delight with his charges for progressing to the next round of the competition.

“We played well today and deserved to win. Just like every team, it is also our target to win this tournament,” he said in a post-match interview.

Last season both Mutare clubs failed to go beyond the group stages of the knock-out competition whose opening rounds were held in a round-robin format at four venues across the country.

The diamond miners and the prisons wardens were in the same Group Three as Black Rhinos and Cranborne Bullets and played their matches at Sakubva Stadium.
