CHIKORE High’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory received a major boost after the Chipinge school received ICT gadgets from its former learners.

Mr Obadiah Mugano, spokesperson of the alumni known as Team ’81 and whose membership is drawn from throughout the world, said the gesture – which saw them handing over a projector, two laptops and other computer accessories – is meant to bridge the digital divide between the school and its urban counterparts.

He said as ex-learners of the school, they have seen it worthwhile to contribute towards the development of the learning institution that helped to mould them.

The presentation of the ICT gadgets coincided with the school’s speech and prize giving ceremony, which was held under the theme: “Transforming Lives Through Education 5.0”.

“As a group, which has 38 members presently, we felt it was good to give back to the school that shaped our lives. Of importance these years is the ability of the learner to be computer literate. For that reason, we gave to the school an Epson projector, two laptops and other computer accessories to the tune of US$2 000,” said Mr Mugano.

Another member of the alumni, Ms Moreblessing Mlambo, said the group will continue assisting the school to help it achieve its goals.

“We are hat we are today because of Chikore High, Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to give the little that we have towards making the school be on a sound footing in terms of ICTs,” she said.

She said the group will reward pupils who excel in computer science as a way of boosting their morale.

Mr Richard Mapanda, one of the three Team ‘81 members, said if every former leaner devoted time and a few resources towards rebuilding their ex-school, it would bring positive developments.

He said: “We may not be wealthy, but drove us to come up with this initiative is the desire to see our former school continue to develop and be in line with the modern technological trends.”

“We are grateful and this is a welcome development. Other former pupils can emulate this and uplift the standards of the school,” he said.

Guest of honour, Mr Philemon Mlambo, who is also an ex-learner, pledged to refurbish the desks in the school’s computer laboratory.

“Our desire is to have Chikore High keep speed with the latest ICTS trends. As such, I pledge to refurbish some of the desks in the computer laboratory. I am happy that girls are doing well in science subjects, with two of them winning prizes in the computer studies at national level in Gweru,” he said.
