WITH the preparations for the 2023-2024 agricultural season starting, the City of Mutare has warned residents against cultivating in undesignated areas.

The local authority said in a notice to the public that urban farming activities must only be carried out while also upholding the conservation of local invaluable resources as well as protection of the environment.

Only land designated for cultivation may be put to use for the 2023-2024 agricultural season, said City of Mutare, adding that adding that cultivation in undesignated areas may lead to the destruction of crops and/or prosecution.

“In terms of council by-laws and regulations, only land designated for cultivation may be put to use for the 2022-2023 agricultural season. No cultivation shall be permitted on land within 30 metres from stream banks, land within 10 metres of a road, land on slopes or uphill and land that has been surveyed for residential and industrial development,” reads the notice.

Mutare City Council urged residents to obtain permits for farming activities around the city from their Housing and Community Services Department.

Urban farming is prevalent in most residential areas around Mutare and on the city’s peripheries.
