Businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, who are facing fraud charges involving a US$7 million Presidential Goat Pass-on Scheme will spend the night in custody after the State successfully applied that their bail hearing be set for Thursday.
The State led by Mr Anesu Chirenje had applied for postponement of the two’s bail hearing to tomorrow saying he wanted to ascertain whether they had attended court on their own or were brought in by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC).
The State also said it wanted to review documentary evidence before filing an application opposing Mpofu and Chimombe’s bail request.
Mr Chirenje also told the court that the State intends to lead evidence from two investigating officers from ZACC.
Mpofu and Chimombe, through their lawyers Mr Tapson Dzvetero and Mr Arshiel Mugiya had opposed the postponement saying issues of bail should not arise as they were coming from home.
They argued that in terms of the law they were supposed to be released on free bail.
The duo also argued that the State is well-versed with the documentary evidence it wanted to rely on in its application.
Harare Regional Magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa upheld the State’s application and postponed the matter to Thursday afternoon.
