New Chimurenga star rises

His voice might not be as deep as Thomas Mapfumo’s vocals but new chimurenga musician Jairos Chabvonga has potential to scale dizzy heights in the local music industry. His vocals blend well with a well done chimurenga beat while his backing vocalists put the icing on the cake. Performing as a curtain-raiser for Jah Prayzah at Airport Lounge last weekend, Chabvonga delivered a polished act that surprised many that did not know him.

When he went up the stage most patrons did not recognise him but he caught everyone’s attention with his very first song and his performance kept the audience on their feet. Leading his Ngorimba Afro Fusion band, Chabvonga had a memorable night in office.

He is on a mission to reach out to chimurenga fans through live performances and a new album titled “Nevanji” that was released recently.
Some of the tracks on the album include “Magumo Enyika”, “KuZimbabwe”, “Maidei”, “Dongo” and “Botso”.

Basically his songs comment on social matters transpiring everyday.
The upcoming musician said he was inspired by Mapfumo to pursue chimurenga music.

“From childhood I enjoyed Mapfumo’s music and he is my inspiration in the music industry. Most artistes are turning from this genre but I am ready to keep the chimurenga fire burning,” he said.

His album was recorded at Revival Studios and he says the title signals the beginning of his career.
“The album title is a Shona word which means first born and this is my first product. To all music lovers expect to see more from this group,” he said.

The outfit is made up of some people who have been in the industry for a long time.
It consists of the ex- Jah Prayzah dancer and backing vocalist Evidence Kufinya better known as Generator in the entertainment industry.
The group’s Prince Mutongi used to play for Pastor Charles  Charamba and reggae musician Mannex.

There is also Persuade Chidodo who is a former guitarist of Fungisai Zvakavapano–Mashavave and the late Andy Brown.
Chabvonga said the will have more live shows to market the album.

“We are not relaxing and we are going to continue with our live shows in various parts of Harare since we want more people to become familiar with us,” he said.
