NEW: China endorses UN Special Rapporteur findings

Online Reporter

China has endorsed the preliminary report released by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of the unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, Ms Alena Douhan, saying Western sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe should be lifted immediately.

Reacting to Ms Douhan’s recommendations in a statement, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Wang Wenbin, said the observations by the UN Special Rapporteur show that unilateral sanctions have a debilitating impact on Zimbabwe’s capability to grow her economy.

Mr Wang criticised Western countries for preaching human rights, while imposing sanctions that affect the enjoyment of the same rights.

“China firmly opposes all unilateral sanctions and supports the Zimbabwean people’s rejection of external interference and pursuit of an independent development path.

“Once again, we solemnly urge certain organisations and countries including the US to lift illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe at an early date and earnestly help Zimbabwean people to combat Covid-19 and revitalise the economy.”
