NEW: Chinese firms pledge environmental stewardship

Online Reporter

CHINESE mining companies operating in Zimbabwe have made a commitment to establish an association that facilitates the implementation of environmental conservation programmes.

This was revealed at a recent press discussion on the state of Chinese business investments in Zimbabwe and the future of Sino-Zimbabwe relations.

Speaking at the event, Chinese mining company African Empire Group chairperson Mr Steve Zhao said the association will commence operations soon.

“We felt the need to intervene and help enforce maximum compliance of the Zimbabwean mining and environmental laws for compliance by all Chinese entities through this association that we intend to be part of,” he said.

“We have realised there are a lot of problems coming from the mining sectors, hence we pledge to conserve the environment through an association which will start operating by end of this month.”

Mr Steve said Chinese mining companies strive to keep the country green as advocated by Environmental Management Agency.
