POLICE in Chipinge and Chimanimani districts have banned the carrying of dangerous weapons in public places following the escalation of violence perpetrated using traditional weapons in the two districts
In terms of Section 4(4) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23, any person who fails to comply with the prohibition order shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a period not exceeding Level Five or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months or both a fine and imprisonment.
The weapons banned include catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knifes and daggers.
Officer Commanding Chipinge District and Chimanimani District, Chief Superintendent Godwills Chinyanganya said the temporary prohibition order will be effective until November 18, 2023.
“In terms of Section 4 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23, I Chief Superintendent Godwills Chinyanganya being the officer commanding ZRP police in Chipinge District and being regulating authority as provided for under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23 of the area bounded by Mutare River at the north, Odzi and Nyamushanga rivers at the North West, Devuli River at the West, Save River at the south and Mozambique border at the east believe on reasonable grounds that the carrying of traditional weapons in public whether openly or by concealment in a public display is prohibited,” he said.
Chipinge South has of late record a rise in the number of murder cases mainly caused by members of the public using dangerous weapons.
