CHIPINGE Ward Six councillor, Councillor Lovemore Mkwpati, was yesterday elected as the new town chairman.

Cllr Mkwapati was unanimously elected in yesterday’s meeting convened to fill posts left vacant by the recently recalled councillors.

Among the four councillors who were recalled by MDC-T for not representing the party’s interests was former chairman, Zivanai Nyakuchena (Ward One).

Accepting his election, Cllr Mkwapati said he is ready for the mandate.

“I am ready to deliver and improve on service delivery in the town during my tenure. As council, we hope to successfully tackle all the outstanding issues we are facing,” said Cllr Mkwapati.

Chipinge residents have been disgruntled with the MDC-T led council for allowing party politics to affect service delivery.

A resident in the town, Mr Vrante Mahlupeko, said: “The council was badly letting us down and there are several issues that need to be urgently resolved.

“We need better service delivery instead of the constant bickering we had become used to. We hope the tribunal that was set up to investigate the suspended town secretary, Susan Dube, will do its job,” said Mr Mahlupeko.
