WHEN CAPS United slumped to their worst defeat in history – the 6-2 drubbing at the hands of Manica Diamonds in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Sakubva Stadium earlier this year – it was to become the beginning of a nervy free-fall.
That humiliation in Mutare on February 27 sparked a seven-match winless streak.
However, after riding through the storm and finding their rhythm again, CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe has reserved special praise for the team’s fans, who stood by the club during their bad patch.
CAPS United fans, who sometimes turn against their team when results are not coming their way,
surprisingly did not jeer their side during one of the most difficult periods in the club’s history.
Chitembwe, a club legend and former midfielder, said his charges have to repay the faith shown in the team by fans through consistent performances in the second half of the season.
“I want to give a special mention to CAPS United fans. We have been going through a lot of things, but they have been there for us, giving us the much-needed support,” said Chitembwe.
Last Saturday, CAPS United showed their battling qualities when they rallied from behind twice to force a 2-2 draw against Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab Stadium.
“The guys showed good spirit, but at times it doesn’t count much when you do not get a much-deserved victory. But it is something that you can build on.
“Going into the next round of matches, we need to build on such a fighting spirit,” he said.
While CAPS United have been rejuvenated, their next opponents Manica Diamonds are on the decline and barely recognisable as the side that handed them a 6-2 humbling.
The match at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday is being billed as a revenge mission by the Makepekepe faithful.
