A CHOLERA case was yesterday confirmed in Chimanimani District, among the six new cases reported across the country, taking Manicaland Province’s cumulative total of culture confirmed cases to seven.

Culture confirmed are those tests carried out to identify whether one has bacterial infection and performed on stool specimen, which is the standard for the laboratory diagnosis of cholera.

According to yesterday’s Ministry of Health and Child Care Disease Surveillance Report, Manicaland has 22 cumulative suspected cases and 10 cumulative recovery cases.

The province has the highest number of hospitalised cases (five), which is nearly half of the total (12) countrywide.

However, no cholera-related deaths have been recorded in Manicaland.

“As of March 18, 12 cases are hospitalised. These are admitted at Chimanimani District Hospital (five), Beitbridge District Hospital (two), Chinengundu Clinic in Chegutu District (two), Bikita District Hospital (one), Thorngroove Hospital in Bulawayo (one) and Chidodo Clinic (one) in Mbire District,” reads part of the report.

Eight new recoveries were recorded, to take the national recovery rate to 89 percent.

As of yesterday, 159 suspected cases of cholera were recorded countrywide, with 17 being confirmed.

128 recoveries have been recorded and there has been one death.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by bacteria. This occurs when one consumes food or water contaminated with the cholera bacteria. Cholera causes severe dehydration, diarrhoea and can lead to death. It can easily be prevented and controlled.
