THERE is an overwhelming response to the call for the free paediatric hernia screening and repair exercise that is being conducted by the Ministry of Health and Child Care and funded by the Government of Japan at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

The provincial screening exercise, which is being conducted today at the hospital, saw hundreds of parents and guardians turning up for the free services.

Surgical repairs will be conducted by a surgical team of doctors from tomorrow until Friday.

The screening and repairs is being conducted on children aged between two and 12 years.

According to a media brief released by Ministry of Health and Child Care in partnership with World Health Organisation, the move is in response to the launch of the first National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Strategy (NSOAS) 2022-2025 by Government on September 30, 2022 to address challenges Zimbabwe faces in providing timely, affordable, safe and quality surgical services.

Hernia is when a part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the belly (abdominal) muscles.

The hernia creates a soft lump or bulge under the skin.
