NEW: City of Harare begins drainage system clearance

Online Reporter

THE Harare City Council (HCC) has embarked on a drainage system cleaning exercise ahead of the rainy season to avoid blockages and flash flooding.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, HCC spokesperson Mr Stanley Gama said the exercise will continue until the season was over.

“We started clearing the drainage system in the CBD three weeks ago and our programme will continue until the rainy season is over,” he said.

“The drainage cleaning started in Harare CBD’s downtown where there are a lot of activities.”

Mr Gama said their efforts were being undermined by illegal vendors who threw litter at undesignated points, resulting in drain blockages.

‘’The problem is our own residents and vendors who litter everywhere, which ends up blocking the drainage system,” he said.
