PURSUANT to turning Mutare into a smart city in line with Vision 2030, the city council has embarked on revamping the street lighting infrastructure to ensure public safety and security of properties.

In an interview, City of Mutare spokesperson Mr Spren Mutiwi said this is an ongoing exercise targeting most parts of the city.

He said the move is aimed at reducing robberies, burglaries, property defacement and other crimes that are committed under the cover of darkness.

The local authority recently completed the installation of street lights in Morningside following a similar exercise in the downtown area.

“We are currently revamping Mutare’s street lighting infrastructure as we are on a drive to turn into a smart city in line with Vision 2030. The exercise is going on very well and recently we completed work in Morningside. Similar work was also done in the downtown area.

“As the city boasts tourism potential, our idea is also to tap into that and promote night tourism as Mutare look exquisite when properly lit at night,” he said.

Mr Mutiwi called for a sense of community ownership to protect the revamped street lighting infrastructure from vandalism.

He urged residents and stakeholders to continue paying utility bills timeously as this contributes to improved service delivery.

A Morningside resident, Mrs Alicia Chimbetete commended the local authority for improving street lighting.

“We are delighted with this development and hope that the cases of robberies and thefts that had become rampant in our area will be significantly reduced,” she said.
