STRENGTHENING collaborations and synergies between Government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) is essential to address challenges faced by girls, especially in the context of the El Nino-induced drought.
These sentiments were made during Shamwari YeMwanasikana (SYS)’s 10 years anniversary celebrations of operation in Zimbabwe last Friday.
The event was held at the organisation’s one-stop centre, Tariro Yedu, in Vhera village in Seke, which is still under construction.
SYS is a local child empowerment organisation, whose aim is fighting vices that are weighing down on the full development girls.
Said SYS director Ms Ekenia Chifamba: “Collaborations of development partners, corporates, traditional leaders, religious leaders, key Government ministries and other stakeholders play a critical role in ensuring the girl child is empowered and protected.
“As we celebrate 10 years of existence, we commend Government for declaring a state of disaster, a development that will lessen the burden on the livelihoods of the girl child who is always at the receiving end in times of drought as very little resources will be channeled towards sexual reproductive health leading to early child marriages and sexual exploitation.”
Ms Chifamba said a multi-sectoral approach was required in resource mobilisation to empower girls during drought periods.
Mr Governor Madzorera, who was representing Chief Seke at the event, commended the organisation for its dedication to uplifting the lives of girls through its various programmes.
“As traditional leaders, we are very much excited about the programmes being undertaken by organisations like Shamwari Yemwanasikana, which have transformed the lives of our girls,” he said.
“As you are aware the girl child has always been vulnerable, especially during times like drought.”
