South African police arrest six suspects for murdering soccer player

THE South African police authority said Wednesday that they have arrested six suspects who allegedly hijacked and killed Luke Fleurs, a Premier Soccer League (PSL) player from the country’s professional soccer club Kaizer Chiefs.

Fleurs, 24, was killed during a hijacking last week in his vehicle at a petrol station in Johannesburg.

“The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, while the vehicle, which was already stripped, was recovered on Monday. Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing,” the police said in a statement.

The police said the suspects will appear at Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

According to local media, Fleurs joined Kaizer Chiefs as a free agent in October 2023, and he was named the 2021/22 PSL Young Player of the Season. – Xinhua
