New Competition Commission board appointed

Industry and Commerce Minister Mike Bimha (pictured) on Tuesday appointed a new 10 member board of directors for the Competition and Tariff Commission (CTC).The commission is tasked with ensuring fair play in the conduct of business to make sure that other players and consumers are not prejudiced by bigger players or those enjoying a monopoly.

Engineer Anthony Mutemi, who is the former managing director of the now defunct Steelnet Zimbabwe Limited chairs the new CTC board. Other board members include economists Peter Kadzere and Takunda Mugaga, lawyer Karen Bopoto and chartered accountant Mercy Chigunduru.

Acting Zimbabwe Revenue Authority commissioner general, Happias Kuzvinzwa, Maria Chinomwe, Felistas Ndawi who is the finance director for Seed Co, Dr Albert Makochekanwa and one Dr D.B Moyo make up the rest of the board.

Bimha said there was a “backlog of issues” that the board had to tackle as a matter of urgency. Engineer Mutemi said the most immediate task for the board would be appointing a substantive director for the CTC.

“The organisation has been running for three years without one,” he said.

Bimha also appointed a new and substantive board chairperson for the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) company, Ruth Ncube. Ncube is the managing director of insurance firm, First Mutual Life.

She was previously the board’s vice chairperson. Ncube, who appealed for government support to grow the company, said her focus would be on growth and trade orientation, innovation and events and exhibitions. – New Ziana.
