THE onset of the 2026-2027 rainfall season, which runs between October and December, is projected to be erratic and below-normal countrywide, the Meteorological Service Department (MSD) has said.
In a statement yesterday outlining the 2026-2027 rainfall season outlook, MSD said several parts of the country are likely to experience no effective onset.
“There is an increased chance of below-normal rainfall across the entire country during this period. This marks the beginning of the rainfall season, which is projected to have a highly erratic start with a significant portion of the country expected to see no effective onset,” said the weather forecaster.
October and November are forecast to be predominantly dry nationwide, added MSD, with some northern areas expecting normal to below-normal rainfall in October.
However, December may bring slight relief to southern Matabeleland South, extreme southern Midlands, and southwestern Masvingo with normal to above-normal rainfall.
The rest of the country should still expect below-normal rainfall, said MSD.
The weather forecaster also outlined the January-February-March 2027 rainfall forecast.
“The southern and western parts of the country should expect normal to below-normal rainfall, while the remaining parts of the country are forecast to receive below-normal rainfall. Warmer-than-normal temperatures are expected to prevail throughout this period. An update for the last three months of the season will be issued as the season progresses,” said MSD.
