CONCESSION United, a team from a farming community in Mashonaland Central, are one of the six clubs that have been promoted into the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL).
The other teams include Shamva Stars (who are also from Mashonaland Central province), the Harare province pair of Prison Stars and ZRP Harare, and the duo of MWOS and Omnia from Mashonaland West province.
These teams were champions in their respective provincial Division Two leagues.
In confirming the six teams’ promotion via a statement on Monday, NRSL chairperson Martin Kweza said the teams would, however, still have to meet “set criteria” to play in the competitive second-tier league.
“This communique serves to advise that the following teams stand to be promoted to the NRSL, following their promotion from their respective leagues, once they meet with our set criteria, as was further communicated to the said teams at our recently held meeting,” Kweza said.
But, before they secured promotion, there was drama at Concession United’s last match of the season when the winner-takes-all encounter was abandoned in the 88th minute after the visiting Zambezi team’s players attacked the referee.
The hosts were leading 2-0 before the ugly scenes erupted.
It will be the first time in more than a decade that a team from Concession – a small farming and mining town located about 60 km from Harare – has featured in Division 1.
