NEW: Crops see significant improvement following heavy rains

THE condition of crops across the country has vastly improved following recent rains.

Acting chief director of Agricultural Advisory and Rural Development Services Mr Leonard Munamati told The Sunday Mail Online that early planted crops are flourishing, with some irrigated fields already reaching flowering stage.

“The recent rains have greatly enhanced crop health nationwide,” said Mr Munamati.

“We urge farmers to control weeds to minimise competition for nutrients and regularly inspect their fields for pests, ensuring timely intervention against threats like the fall armyworm.”

Meanwhile, Mr Munamati has warned of a rise in the number of African armyworm moths detected across Zimbabwe.

“There has been an increase in worm populations, as indicated by our pheromone traps,” he said.

“We have also received reports of African armyworm outbreaks in areas such as Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe, Shamva and Murewa.”
