NEW: Woman accuses husband of abuse over witchcraft, polygamy

A 45-year-old woman from Harare has accused her husband of verbal and sexual abuse, claiming he assaults her in public for “bewitching his second wife”.

Future Sadho made the allegations on Tuesday at Harare Civil Court where she was seeking a protection order against her husband Edmore Mukwati.

She said Mukwati frequently beats and calls her a “birth machine” in front of their children.

“He constantly assaults me in front of the children, accusing me of bewitching his second wife,” said Sadho.

“He says I must take care of the children alone since I am working.”

Sadho also accused her husband of forcing himself on her even when she is unwell.

“When I returned from giving birth, he didn’t give me time to heal. Even when I am sick, he forces himself on me, which is rape,” she said.

“He says he is no longer interested in me because I only give birth to male children. He even claims that women from Masvingo are just birth machines.”

In defence, Mukwati denied the allegations, arguing that Sadho was exaggerating.

“All she is saying are lies. I did not beat her; instead, we fought each other,” he said.

“She just needs to understand that I am her husband and should respect me.

“She should also treat all the children equally, including those from my second wife, because we are one big family.”

Magistrate Ms Meenal Naratam ordered Mukwati to stop assaulting or insulting Sadho.
