NEW: Diagnostic services decentralised to combat January disease

THE Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) has set up four laboratories across the country to combat January disease as the country anticipates a general increase in livestock diseases during the current rainy season.

Cattle are particularly vulnerable to diseases during the rainy season.

DVS chief director Dr Pious Makaya told The Sunday Mail Online that the department has decentralised diagnostics to provinces to improve disease surveillance.

“With the onset of the rainy season, farmers and other stakeholders in the livestock industry should expect a general rise in animal diseases across the country,” he said.

“We have established four veterinary laboratories in Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North and the Midlands province.

“All this was done to bring the diagnostic process closer to farmers and enhance disease surveillance throughout the country.”

Dr Makaya urged farmers to dip their cattle as part of preventive measures.
