NEW: Earthquake rattles Chipinge

AN earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 was felt in Chipinge and the surrounding areas yesterday night.

 

Chipinge District meteorological officer Ms Lydia Masengu confirmed the incident which occurred around 11:30pm.

 

She said no damage was recorded.

 

“I confirm that a tremor occurred last night.

 

“The preliminary location shows that the earthquake occurred at Latitude -20.494 and longitude 32.632 and the magnitude was determined to be 4.4,” said Ms Masengu.

 

She said the epicentre is in Zimbabwe close to the Mozambique border near Mt Selinda area.

 

Added Ms Masengu: “It was widely felt in Chipinge and the surrounding area and the local people called our offices to enquire about the tremor”

 

Ms Masengu said the Zimbabwe-Mozambique eastern border area shows high earthquake activity.

 

She added that most of the earthquakes that occur in this region are due to natural plate tectonics and this is attributed to the East African Rift System which extends into Mozambique.
