NEW: Eight Harare municipal police officers suspended over corruption

Online Reporter

EIGHT Harare City Council (HCC) municipal police officers have been suspended over allegations of abuse of office and corruption, among several charges.

HCC head of corporate communications Mr Stanley Gama confirmed the development.

“HCC has gathered evidence of illegal practices against at least eight officers, who have since been suspended while investigations continue,” he said.

“Some of them were identified by victims at a parade.

“They will go through the normal disciplinary hearings.”

HCC, Mr Gama said, has noted with concern some serious transgressions and unprofessional conduct by some elements within the municipal police.

“Some municipal traffic police officers are terrorising residents by extorting money from motorists under the guise of having arrested them for traffic violations,” he added.

“We urge residents to report any cases of transgressions and criminal activities by our municipal police.”

The local authority has since appointed an anti-corruption crack team to investigate such matters.
