IN a bid to curb early child marriages and empower women, the Manicaland chapter of Young Women for Economic Development (YW4ED) has initiated a poultry project for Mafararikwa and Zimunya-Marange communities.

YW4ED Manicaland chapter chairperson, Ms Patricia Gudhlande said the project is aimed at eradicating poverty among young women in the province as well as improve their livelihoods.

“By initiating this poultry project here, we seek to empower young women and prevent them from getting into early marriages. They have the capability to transform their own lives and those of their communities for the better by carrying out ventures that sustain their livelihoods.

“Advancing the interests of young women through such enterprises reduces dependency syndrome and promotes the province and country’s economic development,” said Ms Gudhlande.

Ms Gudhlande said they are planning to initiate several other projects in various sectors of the economy across Manicaland Province to drive empowerment programmes for young women.

She urged young women to participate in the initiated ventures in their numbers.
