SOMETHING big is happening in chess.

And if the increased number of competitions and sponsors coming on board is anything to go by, Zimbabwe could be heading for a new era.

This comes at a time when the Warren Park Academy made history by clinching victory at the first-ever 2025 Meemnart Chess Tournament, hosted at Roosevelt Girls High School recently.

The fiercely contested event featured 52 competitors from different schools, with Warren Park Academy outmaneuvering the field to win the title.

Roosevelt Girls High secured second place, while Mufakose High (Triangle) completed the podium in third.

The champions pocketed a US$1,000 cash prize, with runners-up earning US$750 and US$500, respectively.

Every participating school was also awarded chess boards in recognition of their spirited efforts.

Tournament organiser Bernard Chirozva praised the competitors’ exceptional skill and sportsmanship.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to all the schools and players who made this event a success,” said Chirozva.

“The talent and tenacity on display were remarkable, proof that chess in Zimbabwe has a thriving future.”

Looking ahead, Chirozva said they are planning to expand the tournament’s reach.

“Our vision is to involve even more schools nationwide, ensuring every young mind gets the chance to compete and excel.”
