NEW: Fighting drug abuse through music

BUDDING gospel musician Petronella Sengwayo recently hosted an exclusive listening session for her yet-to-be-released music.

Pastor G, Spirit Praise, Jason the Rapper, Tasha Place and Purple Place were among the invited guests.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, the 32-year-old artiste said her music is driven by the need to help youths abstain from drugs.

“There is a need for someone to give the gospel to the young people in a way they can understand, but at the same time enjoy.

“I am really concerned about how the Church is losing a lot of young people to drugs and alcohol.

“Thus, my compositions are meant to help them (young people) out,” said Sengwayo.

The aspiring gospel singer said she hopes her music will have a massive impact on the market.

Her album is expected to be released before the end of the first quarter.

“Procrastination and fear of the unknown has been my greatest challenge over the years.

“However, I have had to remind myself who I am in Christ to get this far. I really hope to win the souls, particularly youths, through this extended playlist,” she said.

Sengwayo started her music journey at the age of seven, when she used to sing in church, which was led by her late father, Julius Gobvu.

She studied pensions management and worked in a lab as a billing clerk until recently, when she resigned to focus on her music career.

Place, an upcoming artiste who opened the event with a performance of her song “Always on Time”, was elated to be part of proceedings.

“Her songs are infectious. You can enjoy them from start to end. The message is poignant and easy to follow. I am glad to be part of this show, celebrating the gift God gave us through her.”

The event director, Knowledge Tirivanhu, was equally delighted.

“This was just a teaser.

“A bigger show dubbed ‘Good Vibes Concert’ will be held on April 29 this year,” he said.

“Working with Petronella has been amazing; however, procrastination was one of our biggest challenges, but we pulled through as it was my duty to take her beyond her expectations,” said Knowledge.
