GOODS worth thousands of dollars where destroyed when a fire razed a shop at Checheche early Monday morning.
Although there were no casualties, nothing was recovered from the inferno.
The cause of the fire could not immediately be established, but is it suspected that an electrical fault may have caused the blaze.
Four tenants who were running grocery, electrical appliances and clothes businesses inside the shop were left counting their losses.
A witness, Mr Simba Mhute, said he first noticed smoke billowing out of the shop.
“I was on my way to the bus station early Monday morning when I first noticed smoke coming out of the shop. Within minutes, a fire broke out. Other alert passersby raised alarm and battled to put out the fire. By the time the people managed to break down the door, the fire had enveloped the entire shop and everything inside was reduced to ashes,” said Mr Mhute.
By the time a fire tender from GreenFuel arrived at the scene, the inferno had already been doused and there was nothing to salvage.
Checheche recently gained town status from being a growth point and there is no fire brigade yet.
