MANICALAND Province is among other parts of the country where a high probability of rainfall above 65mm in 24 hours is expected from today (Thursday) through the weekend until Monday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned.
In a statement issued in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection yesterday, MSD said flash floods are also anticipated in low-lying areas owing to the high rainfall activity.
MSD warned the public that the rain may affect outdoor activity and people should plan with this in mind.
“The effects of a cut-off low expected from Thursday, February 16 into the weekend should be felt in most parts of the country, with heavy rain mainly expected in the southern parts of the country. Rainfall amounts in excess of 65mm in 245 hours with a high probability of flash floods in the low-lying areas are anticipated.
“This is normal for this time of the year, especially in a season that expected to have above-normal to normal rain,” said MSD.
MSD said the public should watch out for blown off rooftops, fallen trees due to strong winds as well as open drains and potholes that may be covered in water.
“Stay indoors during thunderstorms unless if it is an emergency. If travel is necessary, please, take caution on the roads as visibility may be reduced and there may be hidden flood dangers. Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers both on foot or in vehicles,” added MSD.
MSD said it will continue giving updates on the situation through its various platforms.
