LACK of funding is militating against the smooth flow of fixtures in the Mutare Urban Churches Soccer League (MUCSL), with clubs failing to play their matches as scheduled owing to unavailability of basic requirements like transport.
MUCSL is a Christian soccer league that began in 2015 and briefly stopped during the Covid-19 lockdown period that is enabling fellowshipping among believers in Christ through sport despite different denominational backgrounds.
The league gained popularity upon its formation, with a good number of religious denominations joining but of late only eight clubs are actively participating.
Edmore Katewera, who is in charge of disciplinary issues and fixtures in MUCSL, confirmed that some of their affiliates have been having challenges in fulfilling matches owing to lack of transport.
“Some of our clubs are struggling with securing transport for their away matches and they end up failing to fulfil fixtures. Of late, the league has been going on very well but the issue of failure to fulfill matches has been a challenge.
“This is the reason we are now playing games-in-hand to ensure that when we wrap up the league everyone would have played the same number of matches,” he said.
King David (Methodist), Bethsaida Apostolic Church, Church of Christ in Zimbabwe, Apostles of Christ International Church, Heartfelt, Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (Dutch) and Zaoga all have to play some outstanding fixtures.
Apparently, social soccer is no longer about potbellied men humorously roaming on the field of play but a serious enterprise of wellness and social cohesion; no wonder churches have also adopted the game as a tool of unity.
