RECONSTRUCTION of the Gairezi Bridge that was damaged by heavy floods in January is on course despite work being disturbed by recent rains received in the area last week.

The heavy rains received last Friday resulted in the flooding of the area where the contractors, Tensor Systems, are working on.

Manicaland Provincial Roads Engineer, Engineer Kudzai Maganda dismissed reports that the bridge was swept away last week and said: “Nothing was swept away. Water levels rose above the cofferdam during the night and filled the construction area. It has since dropped and the contractor has resumed work.”

When The Manica Post visited the bridge yesterday, contractors were busy at work.

The reconstruction of the bridge is being funded by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA).

The contractors said they expect to have finished the reconstruction before Christmas although they were disturbed by the water which flooded the area they were working on.

The damaged bridge has left villagers in Tangwena, Nyafaro, Ngurunda and Madziwanzira area grappling with serious transport challenges.
