MANICA DIAMONDS kept their chances of challenging for the league championship alive with an impressive 2-0 victory over giants CAPS United at Gibbo Stadium yesterday to cut log leaders Highlanders’ gap at the top to six points.
Seasoned midfielder Ralph Kawondera’s brace late in the second half propelled the Gem Boys to their second successive win and keep them in the hunt for the title.
The diamond miners consolidated their grip on third position with 32 points from 18 matches.
They have won three of their last five matches, drawing one and losing as many.
Manica Diamonds coach Jairos Tapera has, however, remained coy about his side’s title tilt, insisting that they are taking each game as it comes and see where it will take them.
In-form GreenFuel kept their foot on the winning run pedal after getting the better of Yadah Stars by a similar scoreline at the the same venue on Saturday.
The victory, their third on the trot, blew some wind into the Ethanol Boys’ sail against relegation as they have now climbed into ninth position.
They have amassed 23 points from 18 matches.
Manica Dimaonds and GreenFuel will seek to maintain their purple patch when they shift focus to the Chibuku Super Cup in fixtures against Sheasham/Black Rhinos and Chicken Inn respectively.
