The construction of Nyaradza Primary School in Gokwe is almost complete, with the local authority expecting to start enrolment next term, an official has said.
Gokwe Town Council secretary Ms Melania Mandeya said the construction, which began last year, is almost complete and will come as a huge relief to hundreds of pupils who were travelling long distances to the nearest school.
“Construction work at Nyaradza Primary School in Ward 2 is almost complete,” she said.
“We have so far constructed two classroom blocks, which have two classes each. We are now constructing ablution facilities before we commission the school, which is likely to be next term.”
Ms Mandeya said the local authority budgeted $50 000 for the construction of the ablution block, as well as plastering the classroom and administration blocks.
She said the school, which is wholly funded by council, was meant to ease overpopulation at Gokwe Primary School that had an enrolment of over 2 700 pupils.
She said the new primary school was part of the council’s 100-day plan quick win projects.
“The school will be a satellite of Gokwe Primary, which currently has more than 2 700 pupils against a maximum enrolment of 900 pupils,” said Ms Mandeya.
“Some pupils were walking long distances to get to the school, so this will go a long way in addressing the challenge.”
Ms Mandeya said the local authority was working closely with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in the construction of the new primary School.
“The Ministry of Education have been very supportive and they have already identified teachers for the new school,” she said.
“Additional teachers have been availed a to ease staff shortages. I am grateful that the ministry has been supportive of this new project.”
