NEW: Good news for ex-Wenela workers

Online Reporter

HUNDREDS of Zimbabweans who worked in South African gold mines under the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (Wenela) have a reason to smile, after Ministers from the two countries agreed that their payments should be prioritised.

Addressing Tuesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the ex-Wenela compensation issue “took centre stage” during the Bi-National Commission (BNC) Mid-Term Review session that took place in South Africa recently.

“It was agreed that the compensation of ex-Wenela workers should be operationalised,” Minister Mutsvangwa said.

The former workers contracted diseases and are thus being compensated. The issue has dragged for years.
