Government has commended the Medicines Control Authority (MCAZ) for reaching the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Benchmarking Tool Maturity Level 3 (ML3) for regulating medicines and vaccines, shaping key legal reforms, combating drug and substance abuse and increasing access to safe medicines.
Addressing delegates at the MCAZ Annual General Meeting on Thursday, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said the institution has made commendable successes throughout the year.
“This event provides an opportunity to reflect on the great strides we have made in ensuring the health and well-being of our nation while recognizing the hard work and commitment of the MCAZ team.
“Your tireless efforts in regulating medicines, medical devices, and veterinary products are integral to the safety and health of our citizens. Without your unwavering dedication, many of the achievements we celebrate today would not have been possible,” he said.
Zimbabwe recently reached the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Benchmarking Tool Maturity Level 3 (ML3) for regulating medicines and vaccines.
Maturity Level 3 confirms that Zimbabwe has a stable, functional and integrated regulatory system in place.
“This achievement is a testament to your hard work and perseverance in fulfilling MCAZ’s mandate. It is a proud moment for the nation as we move forward with greater confidence in ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines in Zimbabwe.
“However, while we join you in celebrating this accomplishment, you must also remember to continue striving for greater heights. I am pleased to note that, as an authority, you have prioritized attaining GBT ML4 by 2025 in your strategic planning,” said Dr Mombeshora.
The latest development makes Zimbabwe the sixth African country to attain this level.
