GOVERNMENT has made strides in safeguarding the rights and well-being of persons with albinism, as demonstrated by various policies and legislative measures, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Permanent Secretary Mrs Vimbai Nyemba has said.
Speaking during an interactive dialogue at the 55th High-Level Segment of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council Mrs Nyemba said:
“Through a number of policies, including the National Disability Policy of 2021, Zimbabwe has put in place legislative and administrative measures to protect persons with albinism in the social, economic, and cultural spheres of our society.
“The recently-gazetted Persons with Disability Bill specifically provides that persons with albinism shall be entitled to the necessary support regarding health.”
Zimbabwe’s Constitution affords people with albinism full rights, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
These include the right to life, adequate standards of living and social protection, equality and non-discrimination, freedom from exploitation, freedom from violence and abuse, and the right to education, health, work, and employment.
