Government has given the thumbs-up to the Juncao technology, which allows farmers to embark on mass production of mushrooms without harming the environment.
The National Engineering Research Centre for Juncao Technology of the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU) of China developed the Juncao technology (‘Jun’ meaning fungi, ‘cao’ meaning grass) to help support global efforts to promote appropriate agricultural technologies that enhance food security and eradicate poverty.
Speaking at a capacity building workshop on Juncao in Harare on Wednesday, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement, Dr John Basera, said the technology helps farmers to increase income.
“Juncao technology can help conserve soil and prevent soil erosion. Therefore, while providing these benefits, Juncao technology may also spur economic benefit to desert and semi-arid areas by offering an alternative way of preventing desertification and addressing soil erosion and general degradation,” Dr Basera said.
