GOVERNMENT has managed to halve the maternal mortality rate from 960 deaths per 100 000 live births in 2010 to 462 deaths per 100 000 live births in 2019, as it continues to address challenges faced by pregnant and expecting mothers.
This came out of a new report from United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
The report, which was released last week, says: “A big achievement for Zimbabwe. Under five mortality, meanwhile, also declined significantly in just five years, from 75 to 65 deaths per 1 000 live births between 2014 and 2019.”
The same report also highlighted that Zimbabwe has increased spending on health, education and childcare.
“Ninthy-four percent of hospitals have emergency obstetrics and baby care; 92 percent of births are delivered by trained people.”
However, Unicef expressed concern that the neo-natal mortality rate has remained unchanged since 1988 at 31 deaths per 1 000 live births due to HIV/Aids, pneumonia, malaria and diarrhoea.
