Following the completion of the implementation of the first stage of the Hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) this year, Government has now set 2030 as the year of completely phasing out the use of HCFC in the country.
HCFCs, which are extensively used in refrigeration and air conditioning in Zimbabwe, have been proven to contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer.
In a speech read on his behalf, director for Climate Change Management in the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mr Washington Zhakata, said Government has managed to secure funding for the second and final stage of the HPMP.
“I am happy to inform you that the Stage II HPMP Project was approved during the 86th meeting of the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund.
“The Stage II HPMP implementation will see the country reducing its HCFC consumption by 67, 5 percent in 2025 and completely phasing out the use of HCFC by 2030,” said Mr Zhakata.
He urged media practitioners to disseminate information about the impending elimination of HCFCs.
